MILAGRE DOS PEIXES LIVE
In 1974, after recording his first Clube da Esquina album, Milton Nascimento emerged to a resounding success with a series of public presentations which established a radical and qualitative transformation in his career. The show Milagre dos Peixes, performed and recorded live at the São Paulo Opera House with a Symphonic Orchestra conducted by Maestro Paulo Moura, arrangements by Paulo Moura and Wagner Tiso, together with Som Imaginário Ensemble, whose sound was very much akin to Milton’s, has set up a landmark in the Brazilian showbiz.
Equipped with two 16 mm cameras, one Nagra recorder, and along with a small production crew, they documented Milton’s gatherings with old friends, candid walkings and promenades through picturesque places in downtown São Paulo, intervals during the rehearsals, and meetings with the press. The highlights of the footage were, however, the concert at the São Paulo Opera House and a performance at the campus of the University of São Paulo. A workprint was made available and extensively showed all over, being exhibited at the Pompidou Center, in Paris, in the Republic of Cuba and at Universities in the U.S. Brazil never became the country dreamed of by most of people who watched the concert by Milton Nascimento and the Som Imaginário Ensemble at the University of São Paulo Amphitheater in May 1974. The documentary Milagre dos Peixes Live has tried to preserve the most significant sounds and images from those days so that future generations may understand our history and use that knowledge to make a better world.
